Naval Sea Systems Command and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) have collaborated to develop and implement a set of Naval Vessel Rules. These rules are intended for use in the design, construction, maintenance and modernization of non-nuclear naval combatant ships. This allows in-house Navy engineering resources to be focused more on the higher risk mission related aspects of combatants, while maintaining technical control via close collaboration with ABS on the Naval Vessel Rules - the foundation for the process. The Navy retains technical authority but uses ABS as a business partner to administer the Naval Vessel Rules and as an agent in classing ships to the Naval Vessel Rules. This workshop will provide an overview of the Naval Vessel Rules. The cost to attend is $150.

This course is an overview of the early stage ship-design process, encompassing feasibility studies and preliminary design to show how an integrated ship design is developed, starting with a statement of the owner's requirements. Topics addressed include preliminary performance studies, ship synthesis models; hull, machinery, combat systems, and systems engineering analyses, trade-off studies, design integration; and notes on the design of specific ship types, including high-performance ships. The course is of value to engineers new to the field in ship design or already working in the field but not familiar with the early-stage design process. It will also be a refresher course for those naval architects and marine engineers wishing to update their skills in early phase ship design. All participants will be provided with copies of the instructor's presentation slides as well as a certificate of completion. Opportunities will be available for discussion between learners and the lecturer. This is a well-established course that has been presented previously. Professional Development Hours (PDH) assigned: 7.0 Cost to attend is $150 for ASNE/SNAME members and $275 for non-members.
